Sylvester Stallone still has it — at 64! His new film The Expendables (which Stallone directed and starred in with a crew of aging action stars) ruled the box office on its opening weekend, grossing $35 million for the three days ended Aug. 15, 2010.
And Sly is already hinting that a sequel is in the works. But just as impressive is the ripped physique the Rocky star flaunts in the high-octane action film.
HIGH-PROTEIN DIET + WORKOUT 3 DAYS A WEEK
Stallone, who still keeps his body fat at 4-7% (which is what elite athletes in their 20s have), continues to train as if he were decades younger. “I follow a high-protein diet: Anything with a face, that’s what I eat, with something green next to it,” Sylvester recently revealed.
Contrary to what some may think, Stallone has scaled back his workouts as he’s gotten older. “Over the years, my biggest flaw was overtraining,” he said in April 2010 while training for The Expendables. “In the gym six days a week, doing more sit-ups at night … my body was in a constant state of breakdown.”
"I TRAIN SMARTER, NOT LONGER"
He added: “Now I focus on a variety of exercises, working out three times a week for 90 minutes per session. I really feel good–much stronger than I’ve ever felt, actually. Something’s working.”
Not surprisingly, Sly’s unbelievable physique has fueled rumors of steroid use over the years — claims he has denied. But Stallone admitted to Time magazine in 2008 that he took human growth hormone (HGH) and prescription testosterone while training for Rambo and Rocky V.
“HGH [human growth hormone] is nothing,” Stallone said. “Anyone who calls it a steroid is grossly misinformed. Testosterone to me is so important for a sense of well-being when you get older. Everyone over 40 years old would be wise to investigate it because it increases the quality of your life. Mark my words: In 10 years it will be over-the-counter.”
14 INJURIES ON EXPENDABLES SET
Meanwhile, Stallone had a blast shooting The Expendables with fellow action stars Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis.
